The engagement
After graduation from Harvard, Katie chose to enter medical school at the
University of Virginia, while Ryan decided to throw away four years of hard
work in the sciences to enter the financial services world at The Beacon Group/Chase/JPMorgan
(don’t ask—it’s a sore subject).
However, they continued to see each
other as often as possible. Katie arranged to work in a family medicine clinic in Manhattan during
the summer after her first year to be closer to Ryan. One night
after work, Ryan took Katie to One if by Land, Two if by Sea, a restaurant
in Greenwich Village. After dinner,
they made their way up to Central Park and went for a stroll. Ryan took a while
to spot the ideal bench, but eventually found the ideal site with a
view overlooking much of the park and the skyline, knelt before Katie and
asked her to marry him. After much crying and a nearly inaudible yes,
they left the south entrance of the park. Katie was surprised shortly
thereafter when Ryan led her into The Plaza, where he had champagne and chocolate-covered
strawberries waiting for the celebration.
